Going into the two public hearings, I had so much hope for ACHD and so little for Planning and Zoning. Was I ever wrong! Unlike the previous night, I felt the Planning and Zoning Commissioners actually listened to us and understood our issues. They were sympathetic, and were willing to help us on a number of issues such as: all residential areas would be zoned R-8 rather than R-8 and R-15 as the city requested, they requested the improvements to Montague be made as part of Phase 1 (Commercial) and not deferred to Phase 2 (Residential), and they requested the right-in/right-outs be allowed to stay to assist in alleviating traffic entering the plaza. Not as much as we hoped for, but much better than nothing.
I think the point that was driven home to me after this meeting was that the community and the public officials have widely different views on what the Future Land Use Map is all about. The community believes it actually indicates what will be built where, while the public officials at best believe it is a high level guide for what happens in the area and that little if any attention should be directed at specific portions of the map. That came through loud and clear at ACHD and from comments by Planning and Zoning Commissioners about the area where Firenze Plaza was being located sitting on a placeholder designation from the early 1990’s. After we get through the City Council Public Hearing, I’m going to determine the best way to address this issue with the public officials of ADA County and the City of Meridian. I think the community deserves a better understanding of how the public officials view this important document. After all, many of us told them loud and clear that we made perhaps the largest financial decision we will make (purchase of a home) based on that document.

Hopefully this website and blog will help to improve communication among the residents of Tuscany concerning the proposed Firenze Plaza and the efforts being made by many of us to modify that proposal. Categories
